Yes, it'll peel the skin right off your skull, but perhaps more surprising is its capacity for subtlety. If you have a mid- to large-sized room, this is the sub to beat this year. Sean Killebrew reviewed a number of speakers in the Monitor Audio Silver line, but the Silver 100 bookshelf speakers stand out as the best performer and still hold outright excellent value. Gold dome tweeters, C-CAM "rigid surface" woofers, and efficient crossovers make these speakers a top pick in the competitive world of value-based audiophile speakers. Here at the end of 2018, we at HomeTheaterReview.com look back at all the products we reviewed this year and pick the best of the bunch, from budget favorites to aspirational flagship products.

Our editorial staff selected the absolute best products of the year from our 28 total product categories and have given them a special place in AV history as Best of 2018 award winners. Here's the list of winners from least expensive to most expensive. While music might not be as immersive as movies or TV shows with a good surround system, it can still certainly provide a fully immersive surround listening experience.
Best Home Theater Projectors Winners – Charts
Just when you thought Andrew Jones and ELAC couldn't do better, they went like six levels better to take these flagship tower speakers to insane-land. This is a shark-infested part of the speaker market but ELAC is swimming inside of one of those steel cages with this design. Despite the tower design, you still need a sub to get truly impactful deep bass, but that's the only thing less-than-stellar we can say about these amazing value-busters.
So if you want to overclock a CPU which will be able to launch without any XFR tech and is a lot cheaper, the AMG Ryzen Threadripper 1950X is the type of CPU to go for. If you can name any amp designer other than Nelson Pass, chances are good that John Curl's name is the one rolling off your lips. His new JC 5 brings all of the performance of his legendary JC 1 monoblock into the stereo world at a price of just $6,000. You can spend a lot more and not get as much as this Parasound amp has to offer.
McIntosh MX170 Surround Sound Processor and MC257 7-Channel Power Amplifier Review
For example, we are not looking at “standard” lamp-based projectors with less than 1080p resolution in this report. The 1950X is the type of CPU which has up to 32 threads from 16 cores and a base clock of 3.4 GHz. But this is nothing compared to it’s boost, which goes as far as 4.0 GHz per core.

The AV8805 is the latest generation flagship A/V processor and preamp from Marantz. Featuring support for up to 13.2 channels of immersive sound, the... Denon’s AVR-X4700H AV Receiver delivers 9.2 channels at 125 watts per with nearly every available audio and video technology packed into... In both cases, there is little benefit of going beyond the best mainstream processors for single GPU gaming.
Our Picks for the Best Home Theater Systems of 2022:
With the current 1920X available for $431, this launch might push it into a more favorable position in our gaming options. The R isn’t the best CPU in any one category, but it does manage to achieve genuinely good performance – especially at its new price – in gaming, lightweight production, and even in simultaneous livestreaming and gaming workloads. We can strongly recommend the R for a mid-range gaming PC build where the budget can’t quite stretch to i7 or R7 territory. For most users, this CPU will be plenty, just like we once said – about five generations ago, now -- that an i5 is “enough” for most gamers, it is now instead true that an R5 is “enough” for most.
And of course, to see any of those charts in more detail, check our original review. We’re recapping coverage, so we’re pulling charts sparingly and as needed from a year’s worth of CPU reviews. For those older pieces, keep in mind that some of the tests are using older data. For full detail on any CPU in this video, you’ll want to check our original reviews.
What is a surround sound processor?
Similarly with AMD, a 12-core Threadripper at $431 with a $299 motherboard and ~$200 for memory is only really valid with a high-end graphics card if the rest of the system is OK with being mediocre to average. AMD’s APU also comes bundled with a very decent stock cooler, which would also be an additional Intel system cost. With the extra money saved, going after some high speed memory to aid the graphics would be a good idea, which would also carry over if/when a big discrete GPU purchase is made in the future. Building this system in mind, we actually came super under budget, with a full cost of $435.

Krell is back as an AV industry player after a few tough years, and this amp is a brilliant return to form. Processor, promising 28 cores of Skylake-X as well as overclocking. We don’t know much about this part yet, except that we expect it to either draw a lot of power or be low clocked (3.0 GHz?) in order to meet the 205W TDP that was announced a few weeks ago. While we don’t expect this to feature much in our Gaming recommendations, but depending on price it might make an interesting aside our workstation guide. Processors, the 2970WX and the 2920X, with 24-cores and 12-cores respectively.
The award for Best Overall Value goes to AMD’s R this year, which receives the award for its new $160 price-point and its high-marks performance in both gaming and lightweight production workloads. We originally reviewed the R here, although new numbers were published with our 9980XE review. Sure, we know that plenty of lower resolution 720p projectors are still sold, and are the bulk of the under $500 market, but we have the ability to review only so many projectors a year . We never review enough of the lower resolution lamp-based ones to do real comparisons. We will, however, be publishing a separate report of 1080p and lower resolution Pico and Pocket projectors in the coming months.

This is a device that separates and mixes the audio signal from a sound source such as a movie or audio CD. Surround sound processors are used by some audiophiles who prefer to get the most out of their playback equipment. McIntosh amps are designed to sound superb and with the McIntosh Audio Technology in its design, it delivers a smooth, natural, warm and bright sound. The combination of tube and solid-state technology makes McIntosh amps one of the most desirable designs for high-end audio products. For tile-based rendering applications like Blender, the 2700 does well.
For compute users, the story is different, but for anyone wanting the best from their money to play the latest titles, then a mainstream processor is needed. The alternative here from AMD is the other Ryzen APU, the Ryzen G coming in at $99. This would allow a $500 system user that does not do much gaming to spend more money on the rest of the system, such as SSD storage or larger amounts of memory, giving a system with a really nice setup. This also allows a future update to a large graphics card, again with performance within a couple percent of the big AMD chips. That being said, as we move down the gaming scale for graphics cards, to something like a GTX 1060 or RX 580, can bring the build down by up to $1000. These CPUs are still relevant, however some users might prefer to alleviate bottlenecks elsewhere, perhaps pushing users to consider our next price point at $1000.

Featuring improvements in a reworked cache topology and a new mesh interconnections, the 8180 is the type of device which can offer increased scalability and performance. Bowers & Wilkins comes strong to the party with much more affordable speakers that have many design elements derived from the highly lauded 800 Diamond V3 speakers. Close your eyes and take an auditory trip to Abbey Road Studios with these sex-tastic overachievers from the U.K.
How much does a home theater cost?
Since each speaker plays its own role in the setup, you can enjoy a perfectly balanced listening experience that accentuates all the little intricacies and hidden layers of your favorite music. Two minutes into the movie they’ll forget that they were ever mad in the first place. Even by itself, the React Sound Bar is a tremendous upgrade to the sound quality of your TV’s built-in system — with DTS, it can deliver 3D sound for games and movies that is quite impressive. Once you connect the other components, the system reconfigures its EQ settings to give you an immersive sound surround experience that we find immensely satisfying.
